Super League's Spectacular Saturday Night - Full Report
The Basketball Super League saw one of the most exciting nights of the season on Saturday. Hot off the heels of two days of high drama, both fixtures on the two-game Saturday night slate unfolded in exactly the same way.
Out in St. John's for the second successive match-up between the Newfoundland Rogue and Montreal Toundra, tenacious early offence from Armani Chaney and William Brown bolstered Newfoundland. Montreal lagged behind early on despite good bench production while Chaney finished with eighteen points in the first half.
With perfect free-throw shooting in the third, the Rogues had their biggest lead of the game at fourteen points, but in the fourth however it all fell apart for the hosts. Montreal upped their defence and were sparked by Antoine Mason with fifteen points, having trailed for three quarters Montreal outscored the Rogues by twelve in the last quarter, sending the game to overtime.
There Dominick Welch, an unsung hero for the Toundra in this one, unstuck from Newfoundland in the final minute to help clinch the win for the visitors. There were outstanding performances in this one on both ends: Chaney had 33 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists for the Rogues, who also saw 23 points, eight rebounds and four blocks from William Brown.
Welch finished with 26 points for Montreal, who also saw 17 points and 14 rebounds off the bench for Mambi Diawara and a team-best 32 from Mason in the 123-117 victory.
Out in the west the Sudbury Five hosted the KW Titans in another heated, unpredictable encounter. Led by Curtis Hollis on offence and playing shut out defence early on the Titans had amassed an early eleven point lead.
In the second quarter 24 points off the Sudbury bench closed the gap and it remained a single possession game for much of the second half. Better production from close range from Sudbury kept them in front, though the Titans were keeping close and on the hunt to regain their advantage.
KW went six points in front at the top of the fourth, Sudbury tied the scores with an 8-0 run and kept themselves within one ahead of the final minute, where Braylon Rayson and AJ Mosby both hit what they thought would be game winners for their respective teams, but levelled the scores and sent the game to OT.
In overtime the Titans hit eight without reply and when Sudbury threatened KW seized the issue and gained control of proceedings while Sudbury's attempts from beyond the arc all fell short, deciding the outcome. The hosts saw 37 points, eight rebounds and four steals from Mosby, as well as 23 off the bench by Paul Harrison in the loss. Meanwhile the Titans saw eight players finish in double digits, led by Curtis Hollis with 27 points and 10 rebounds, in their impressive 127-122 win over Sudbury.
