Three Game Thursday-Friday in the Super League - Full Report
With the regular season approaching its final month competition in the Basketball Super League starts to heat up, as evidenced by the three games ahead of the weekend.
The Kokomo Bobkats were riding a new wave of confidence after their surprise victory over the London Lightning on Thursday, but came up against shutout defence and tough interior offence in Kitchener, where the KW Titans outscored their visitors 35-13 in the opening quarter.
With great bench production and superior play in the field the Titans defended home court and maintained their healthy lead over the Bobkats, which reached as high as 35 points in the fourth quarter, and finished with them winners 125-99. Ten players finished in double digits, Michael Bruce led all with seventeen points off the KW bench, while Jaquan Lightfoot finished with 14 and 11 rebounds.
At the same time out east the Montreal Toundra travelled to St. John's for the first of three match-ups in a row with the Newfoundland Rogues. Montreal had the edge over the Rogues at the start, led by Antoine Mason, who posted 23 points for them in the first half alone.
Newfoundland started to gain momentum from three-point territory and spent the start of the second half catching up to the Toundra, eventually they went in front in the third quarter but it remained close. The fourth quarter began with seven lead changes, Montreal refusing to give in, it came down to Marquis Collins in the paint and Armani Chaney from the stripe sealing the deal for the Rogues.
Mason finished with 44 points and nine rebounds for Montreal, who also saw three more double digits in the loss. Meanwhile Chaney was the top scorer and rebounder for Newfoundland with 32 and 8 boards, while Collins had 23 in the 115-107 win for the Rogues.
The following night the London Lightning made the short trip looking to snap their losing streak against the Windsor Express but were scorched early on by incredible three-point shooting from their hosts. Led by nine threes Windsor finished the first quarter ahead 41-24 and went on to a 29 point lead in the second.
Jeremiah Mordi and Nick Garth both tried to initiate a fight back in the second half but though they had better bench production, more points in the paint, the Express kept their momentum and maintained their lead. With better production on offence and 92% from free throw line they won by ten points.
Nick Garth finished with 28 points for London and Chris Jones had 25 and seven 7 rebounds and assists in the loss. Windsor meanwhile saw a game-high 38 for Shadell Millinghaus, 25 from Calvyn Blades and 18 points and 10 rebounds for Mike Parks.
Newfoundland's win sees them jump above the London Lightning in the standings, with the KW Titans still on top and Windsor surpassing the Sudbury Five in the bottom half of the table.
