Unpredictable, Unparalleled, Unforgettable - Three Game Super League Weekend Recap
Three teams were Super League action across this weekend and produced three very different games of basketball between them.
Friday night saw the Newfoundland Rogues on the road against the London Lightning, who were evenly matched in the first half; even when the Rogues fell behind by seven, they came back to level the scores at half time.
In the third quarter London stepped up their defence and were sparked by JD Tisdale off the bench to take control of the game. Then lifted by perfect fourth quarters from both Jeremiah Mordi and Jachai Taylor London led by as many as 27 and finished the game 118-94. Armani Chaney and Marquis Collins respectively posted 29 and 21 points for the Rogues, while Jermaine Haley was highly impressive with 30 points, eight rebounds and seven assists on the night.
Newfoundland stayed in Ontario to face the Windsor Express the next day, when the Rogues' all-around play giving them a slight edge over their hosts. Armani Chaney had 19 points in the first half, the last two giving the Rogues a lead of two at half time.
Marquis Collins joined him on offence and soon Newfoundland had the largest lead of the game at eleven points, but in Q4 Ty Groce - a thorn in the side of the Rogues all of Saturday night - was joined by Shadell Millinghaus off the bench in completely turning the game around.
Windsor sank the final quarter dagger, outscoring the Rogues by fourteen and reaching the win by 121 points to 113. It was another big night for Chaney with 35 points as well as eight assists, while Groce led Windsor with 30 in the win while Millingahus had 22 and 10 rebounds off the Express bench.
This all gave way to the showcase game of the weekend: London and Windsor meeting at the Gardens. Always a heated encounter, when the teams met last week the Express won by a single point, making the teams 2-2 against each other on the season.
London had the early lead on Sunday but Windsor were quick to close the gap, led by ruthless offence by Paul Harrison from the get go. The Express had a 13-0 run which put them into a double-digit lead, but after a stagnant second quarter the Lightning burst from the blocks in the second half.
Led by Billy White and Jermaine Haley London went on a rampage and played lockdown defence, with fifteen total rebounds in the third, where they went down by double digits to ahead by six. Windsor quickly closed the gap in the fourth and seven lead changes followed going into the final stretch.
Paul Harrison keeping the Express in front and a 7-1 run gave them a lead of eight ahead of the final minute, which proved too much to come back from in the remaining time. Harrison led all on the floor with 30 points and 14 boards while Latin Davis had 20 for the Express in their five-point win. Chris Jones had 26 for London in the loss, who also saw 25 and 10 rebounds from Billy White.
This loss sees London fall to second in the league table behind the KW Titans; Newfoundland are one place behind the Windsor Express and kept off the bottom spot only by the Montreal Toundra. Check back here to see how the Super League season develops and find more over on the official website.
