Thriller in Montreal, Big Numbers in Sudbury and a Titanic Turnaround - Full Recap
Three games in two days meant plenty of sights for Basketball Super League fans to drink in, particularly on Friday night in Quebec, where more and more thrills came as the Montreal Toundra faced the Newfoundland Rogues.
The Toundra struggled early on and Newfoundland made full advantage, making an early double-digit lead but hosts woke up in the second quarter with Corey Boyd leading on offence. The Rogues maintained a double-digit lead for the remainder of the first half, reaching as high as 17 points.
In the third quarter, led by Antoine Mason and Mambi Diawara, Montreal slowly but surely made their way back into the game and by the end of the third had a single possession between the teams. The Rogues began the final quarter by restoring a double digit lead, Montreal responded with a 14-0 run and went up by two.
After that, the lead changed hands four times, ending with Chaney and Lewis Djonkam three-point lead to the Rogues with seconds left. A three-pointer from Phillip Flory then tied the scores for the Toundra; Newfoundland called a time out and on the final play of the game Omega Harris hit a game-winning layup.
Boyd led all with 22 points for Montreal while his team mate Mason posted 21 in the loss. Victorious Newfoundland saw double-doubles from William Brown, Chaney and Djonkam on the same day as another unpredictable finish over in Windsor.
A jump shot by KW's Anthony Lee was all that could separate the Titans and the Windsor Express, who were both could not untangle themselves in the opening quarter. In the following period Ja'Myrin Jackson and Trendon Hankerson's offence saw Windsor put themselves in control, going on to their biggest lead of the game at 11 points.
When it came to crunch time the Titans stepped up their defence and turned the game around from the stripe. Unable to find a response for their opponents late surge, Windsor had been in control much of the way but in the end were handed a home loss. Latin Davis finished with 18 points for the hosts while Jaquan Lightfoot led all with 19 for the Titans, who also saw 16 points and 13 boards from Anthony Lee in their seven-point victory.
Saturday night in Sudbury saw the highest-scoring game of the week. The home court advantage often makes the Sudbury Five unstoppable, but when the London Lightning paid a visit they did not stand a chance. Their neighbours were on the warpath from the start, outscoring Sudbury by ten points; Rashad Smith led London in the first half with 23 bench points, going on to a game-high 37.
Despite late efforts from Landon Kirkwood and AJ Mosby, thirty-six points proved too much for Sudbury to come back from, but were able to reduce their arrears 141-125. Kirkwood finished with 33 points and Duane Notice had 30 for Sudbury in the loss, while London also saw 34 points and 10 rebounds from Shadell Millingahus off the bench.
