Recapping Super League's Two-Game Manic Monday
Hate Mondays? Then look no further than the action in the Basketball Super League, which started the week with two games of dramatic, high-energy basketball guaranteed to change the mood of any onlooker.
The first of Monday's two-game slate was a back-and-forth thriller between the KW Titans, who were hosted by the Windsor Express in a match-up no one could predict.
After eleven first quarter points from Jaquan Lightfoot, the Titans had an early double-digit lead but that was soon erased by the Windsor Express. Sparked by Chris Jones off the bench, he helped get the hosts back into the game and Latin Davis made the buckets that put them ahead at half time.
The Titans upped the pressure when play resumed but Jones and Paul Harrison kept Windsor in front and briefly held a ten-point lead before KW brought the gap down once again. In the final period Curtis Hollis went off with fifteen points and the Titans were soon looking at a ten-point lead with four minutes left.
Windsor quickly responded and in the final minute a three and a three-point play from Latin Davis levelled the scores and sent the game to overtime. There Windsor opened with a 9-0 run and rode that momentum to the end, where the turnaround was complete, the Express get the home win 119-114.
Latin Davis led the Express with 35 points, Chris Jones had 24 and nine rebounds off the bench, Paul Harrison and Tyler Groce both had double-doubles for the Express. Despite the loss KW's Curtis Hollis had an incredible 40 points, 14 rebounds and six assists, in a game where all the Titans' starters finished in double digits.
At the same time the Sudbury Five hosted the Montreal Toundra in another frantic and back-and-forth battle.
The game started with the teams matching one another point for point, Montreal was the first to find their rhythm and went on to a double-digit lead in the second, only for Sudbury to level off proceedings. A three from Ja'Myrin Jackson and two from the stripe by Evan Harris would then see them end the first half in front.
When play resumed a perfect third quarter by Corey Boyd and huge efforts on defence saw the Toundra go in control of the game, but the game was far from over. A perfect fourth quarter from Sudbury's Duane Notice - where he had the last ten of his 19 points - and the rest of the team doubling Montreal's efforts in the low post saw them outscore their visitors 31-15 to completely turn the game around and finish winners by ten, 99-89.
Landon Kirkwood was again top scorer for Sudbury with a game-high 22 points, his team mate Jalen Hayes had ten points and boards in the contest. For Montreal Dominick Welch posted 18 points and nine rebounds and the visitors also saw 15 off bench from Amari Haynes.
After these results Windsor and Montreal are still behind the Titans and Sudbury in the league standings, but with still plenty more fixtures to come anything could happen when it comes to the playoffs.
