One Night, Four Games, Infinite Action - Full Story in the Basketball Super League
Canada was the place to be for basketball this Saturday as four teams crossed the south border to meet their northern neighbours in an action-packed night in the Super League.
It began with the third meeting in a row between the Albany Patroons and the Newfoundland Rogues, who were looking to sweep the mini-series. The Patroons had the best start, but sparked by Omega Harris the Rogues were soon in control of the game until the second quarter, where Albany outscored their hosts in the field but the Rogues' three-point shooting kept it a single possession game with them in front up to the end of the first half.
When play resumed the Rogues created more open looks for each other in the paint and played better defence, building a double-digit lead which got as high as 24 points down the final stretch. Six Newfoundland players finished in double digits, with Armani Chaney racking up another double-double with fifteen points and thirteen assists, he played a key role in the Rogues' 116-94 win.
Derrick Rowland hit 23 points and seven boards and assists for the Patroons, who also saw 23 from Josh Williams, finishing with ten total boards in the loss for the New Yorkers.
Over in Ontario the Windsor Express made short work of the Pontiac Pharaohs, leading for forty-seven minutes and while both teams dropped fifteen three-pointers, greater high-percentage inside play from Windsor saw them unstoppable on offence.
Calvyn Blades shone in his first start for the Express had a perfect first quarter where he scored 14 points, finishing with 22 along with seven rebounds. Three Windsor bench players finishing in double digits, while Latin Davis dished 13 assists, Paul Harrison the leading scorer with 30 points in the 144-109 blowout win for Windsor.
It was a similar story in Kitchener, where the KW Titans hosted the Glass City Wranglers: the hosts outscored the team from Ohio 61-26 in the first half and led by as many as 49 points in the contest. Alontay Gould was doing all he could to help the visitors, leading all on the floor with 24 points for the Wranglers, but there was no way back into the game for them.
Curtis Hollis was the leading scorer for KW with 22 points, while Jaquan Lightfoot had 21 but was phenomenal on defence, grabbing ten boards on offence and fifteen more on the Titans end while also making five blocks. A standout in an exemplary win for the league-leading Titans, final score 127-83.
The biggest drama of the night happened in Sudbury, where the Sudbury Five played host to BSL debutants Derby City Distillers all the way from Louisville, Kentucky. The teams were evenly matched throughout the first half, the Distillers with the edge from their free-throw shooting and high-intensity offence from Greg Bowie before the half.
Play remained tight when it resumed in Q3 but Sudbury were lifted by their three-point shooting and briefly held a double-digit lead but Derby City quickly closed the gap. More threes from the Five in the fourth put them up by eight and with 1:35 to go were leading by nine, but the Distillers were not about to lie down and accept defeat.
They made it a two-point game after seven points in one minute, Tchumsy Wright tied the scores with a layup and Tarkus Ferguson drew a foul on the final play of the game and hit both from the stripe to make it a surprise victory for the Derby City Distillers.
Ja'Myrin Jackson had thirteen points off the Sudbury bench in the second quarter and finished with 21 and was perfect from the stripe, Jalen Hayes had 23 points and 8 rebounds while AJ Mosby led Sudbury with 32 in the loss. Derby City saw 25 from Ferguson and Graddy Kanku, whose score came from the bench, while Greg Bowie had 30 in the impressive 125-123 win for the visitors from Kentucky.
These results see Sudbury slip to fifth place in the league standings while the KW Titans are still at the top, but there's still plenty of time for things to change dramatically in the latter part of the season.
