March Midweek Madness in the Super League - Recap

Midweek may not seem like an exciting time, except in the Basketball Super League. Wednesday March 13th 2024 saw high drama and high scoring across Canada in the two game midweek slate which began in St. John's where the Newfoundland Rogues welcomed the Albany Patroons from the New York capital.

Early on the Rogues had thirteen points unanswered but their lead was erased by the Patroons, outplaying them from the paint early on, who finished the first quarter with a 19-2 run. It became a single-possession game in the second until midway through when sparked by Armani Chaney, Newfoundland found their scoring rhythm and by the end of the first half now led by nine points.

Led by Ed Dyson in the field Albany closed the gap and after a tight third quarter Newfoundland seized control of the game and sank the dagger in the fourth on 80% field shooting and five three pointers.

Robert Hobson was perfect for the Rogues in the final period, he and Chaney both scored twelve points; he finished on 24 and Chaney with an extraordinary 44 points in the 117-111 win for Newfoundland. Dyson finished with 24 points for the Patroons and his team mate Trevis Wyche had 25 in the loss.

Action then moved westwards to Kitchener where the KW Titans hosted the Windsor Express and superior team work and passing saw them with an early advantage. Windsor tried to buoy themselves from three-point territory but Curtis Hollis was on fire for the Titans with seventeen first half points which saw them lead the Express by fifteen.

After an uninspired first half Windsor returned to the court unrecognizable when play resumed, outscoring the Titans by twelve in the third quarter and inspired by their bench - Montell Jacobs scoring 12 in the third - and after being down by double digits a single possession stood between teams at the end of the third.

The Express kept it tight at the start of the fourth with their eyes on toppling their hosts, twice levelling the scores, but after a 10-0 run from the Titans midway through the fourth Windsor had no time left to recover.

KW found inspiration from unlikely sources in the fourth; Michael Bruce hit eleven points off the bench, finishing with fifteen in the contest, while Ajay Singh did well to draw fouls and hit from the stripe down the stretch. All of them contributing in the team's 123-116 win over the Express.

It was a high-scoring game with Hollis leading with 31 points and Singh with a BSL career-high 18 for KW. Windsor saw 22 off the bench from Shadell Millinghaus and 21 from Paul Harrison in a game where thirteen players who stepped on court finished in double digits.

The Titans' win sees them further cement their lead in the league over the London Lightning, with Newfoundland climbing above the Sudbury Five and Windsor still struggling near the bottom of the table.
