LON vs KIT Game 2 - Super League Finals Report
The Super League Finals resumed Sunday night at the Aud where the KW Titans and London Lightning went to scrap it out in a pivotal point of the best-of-five series.
KW come into game two both with homecourt advantage and a win under their belt. The Titans came back from seventeen points down and outscored the Lightning by nine points in the second half to win Game One 116-104.
Jaquan Lightfoot continued his sensational season with the Titans with a game-high 29 points and fifteen total rebounds in the Titans' first-ever finals win. London were now looking to level the series in game two but sparks were once again about to fly in the Aud.
London held a slim early lead and looked set to break away from KW until the hosts hit a trio of three-pointers without reply, which saw them lead by four. Jachai Taylor kept it a one-point game but Michael Bruce ensured the first quarter would end with the Titans leading by two.
Play resumed with the Lightning tightening the gap from three-point territory, but no sooner had newly crowned Rookie of the Year Dee Barnes given the Titans a six-point lead, London's Freddie McSwain had cut the gap back down to one. Despite London subsequently going in from after eight points without reply, Braylon Rayson and Jaquan Lightfoot ended the half with a layup each and the Titans held a one-point lead at half time.
The players started to feel the pressure from the start of the second half, which began with a one-point lead changing hands until Jeremiah Mordi put London more firmly in front. Both tried to add to the score line but shots kept falling short despite relentless offence on both ends.
Michael Bruce and Curtis Hollis made it a one-point game towards the end of the quarter, but Chris Jones hit four in a row for London, ensuring they held the lead going into the final quarter. He then put up the Lightning's next six points while Hollis and Lightfoot kept it a single-possession game on the KW end.
In the space of a minute London went on a 9-2 run and a three from Nick Garth gave them their first double-digit lead eight minutes from the end of regulation. The Titans kept finding open looks in the low post, followed by a three from Michael Bruce which once again made it a three-point game.
After many misses from both teams another three this time from Braylon Rayson tied the scores with over a minute left on the clock. Billy White responded by adding five points for London in quick succession, but Corey Boyd kept it a one-point game. Garth and Mordi both drew fouls and added from the stripe with seconds left, too late for the Titans to make up the difference, and London had levelled the series with a 111-106 victory.
Curtis Hollis led the scoring with 31 points for the Titans in the loss, with six more KW players finishing in double digits, Michael Bruce impressing with 15 points in 30 minutes on court. For London, Chris Jones and Jeremiah Mordi were key to their success in game two, scoring 25 and 22 points respectively, while Billy White came close to a triple double (17 points, eight rebounds, seven assists).
With the teams level on one game apiece, the 2024 Super League Finals move on to London for Game Three on Thursday, which will hopefully be just as enthralling and unpredictable as the first two.
