Express Make Their Super League Debut in Windsor
The Windsor Express were back in action at the WCFU Centre on January 12th, where they made their debut in the Basketball Super League on home court.
They faced for the first time the Montreal Toundra, who were 1-2 and looking to end their road trip on a high, while the Express wanted to get their inaugural BSL campaign off to a winning start.
Latin Davis got proceedings underway with a three-pointer for Windsor which was followed by three lead changes, ending with Diago Quinn putting Montreal up by three. Windsor applied pressure, twice tying the scores, before the Toundra went on a five-point run followed by a 7-0 streak from Windsor which saw them go ahead of their visitors.
Montreal ended the first quarter by tying the scores then began the second with six points from outside the arc. After Ja'Myrin Jackson put Windsor back in front no more than three points stood between the teams for much of the quarter, with both matching the opposition from all places on the floor.
Windsor finally found some momentum just before halftime and put together a 9-1 run which saw them leading by seven at the end of an eventful first half.
When play resumed Brandon Beloti tried singlehandedly to try and initiate the fight back for the Toundra, with Levi Lendoe making it a single-possession game with a three. Paul Harrison was on hand to prevent the Express from falling behind while Montreal continued to pile on the pressure in the paint.
Windsor ended the third quarter with fifteen points unanswered, finally ended by Lendoe early in the fourth. Montreal had a lot to make up in the final period and started strong from close range but the Express kept interrupting their flow.
Antonio Davis and Mouhamadou Dioum led the Toundra as they threw everything at their hosts to try and turn it around, but with Jackson unstoppable from outside and the rest on the floor hitting from close range the Express put the win out of reach for Montreal and won their first BSL game 105-94.
Phillip Flory led Montreal with 25 points in the loss, with his team mate Mouhamadou Dioum a rebound short of a double-double with twelve points and Lendoe dishing out thirteen off the bench. Paul Harrison had a game-high 29 points for Windsor, with Jackson contributing 24 and Latin Davis posting 15 points and 10 assists.
Windsor will next face familiar foes in the KW Titans in Kitchener, before they face the Toundra once again after Montreal play the Sudbury Five as their Ontario road trip continues.
