CPL: Five Talking Points of Week 2
An exciting week of Canadian Premier League action produced plenty of highlights taking place all across the country.
1. Late Drama in the Snow
With the snow falling over Clarke Field, FC Edmonton and their opponents York United left the most exciting moments almost to the very end.
Osaze De Rosario finally made the breakthrough for York in the eighty-second minute with a wild, powerful strike that blindsided everyone as it flew past the entire Edmonton defence. The response was immediate: Edmonton swarmed the box on the other end, leaving York guessing who would be taking the shot, which turned out to be Mastanabal Kacher who fired home the equaliser for the home team.
2. Atletico Ottawa Continue Their Perfect Start
A Malcolm Shaw headed goal was all the separated Atletico Ottawa and the HFX Wanderers in Ottawa, one that turned the capital team's earlier win into a winning streak and they are yet to concede a goal in the admittedly still-young 2022 season.
3. From Long Range...
In Hamilton, Forge's Alessandro Hojabrpour opened the scoring against the Cavalry in some style, firing a wild shot far outside the box just two minutes in through the Cavalry defence and into the back of the net.
In the same match Cavalry's Ali Musse showed the crowds that anything Hojabrpour could do, so could he. Minutes after Joe Mason levelled the scoring for Cavalry, Musse gave them the lead with another power strike coming from outside the box, almost from the same distance the Forge midfielder.
4. The Goal of the Week
With time ticking down between Forge and Cavalry, the home team needed a moment of inspiration to avoid defeat, and did they ever get it. David Choiniere brought the scoring in this enthralling match to an end with a late attempt at goal which curved past every Cavalry defender and found the slender gap to save a point for the home team at the end of this wild match-up at Tim Hortons' Field.
5. Three Goalscorers, One Assists Man
Marco Bustos had a hat trick for Pacific, but of assists, finding Manny Aparicio, then Alejandro Diaz and finally Josh Heard, all of whom found the back of the net off of Bustos' delivery.
Valour played with ten men for most the match and the loss would have been much worse for them were it not for an own goal by Olakunle Dada-Luke in the first half and a late penalty converted by Moses Dyer. It was another home win for the defending champions though and the highest-scoring of all eight games played so far.
