Canadian Premier League: The Week's Five Main Moments

As the race for playoff places heats up, so does the action in the CPL. This week had some pretty special sights and stories develop at an increasingly crucial part of the 2022 season, here are the five biggest talking points of the week's action:

1. York Light It Up at Home

Showing they are still in the hunt for a playoff spot, York United went off at home against FC Edmonton. Molhelm Babouli bookended the scoring with an early header and a late penalty, with a thunderous strike from Osaze De Rosario in between. Courtney Smith clawed back some dignity for FCE, but the three points still went to a deserving York after ninety minutes.

2. A Penalty Felt Around the CPL

While it was quiet at the Wanderers Grounds between HFX and Valour, a Sam Salter penalty with just over half an hour played would change so much in the makeup of the league: it would be the game-winner for the Wanderers, ending Valour's eleven-game unbeaten streak and kept the team alive in the race for the post-season.

3. Sparks Fly at The Donut Box

One of the oldest rivalries in the CPL keeps producing the best highlight games. That was the case between the latest match-up between Forge and Cavalry FC, with the feelings between the teams boiling over and the goals coming early on and in spectacular style at Tim Hortons Field. Rather than describe it, check out the highlights:

4. Sissoko's Clean-Up to Double the Lead

Woobens Pacius was denied a goal this week by Cavalry keeper Marco Carducci but Aboubacar Sissoko pounced on the loose ball to hammer home one of the best goals of the week, which also doubled Forge's lead over Cavalry to the delight of the home fans.

5. Driving Didic Free Kick Was the Leveler

The defending champions were on the back foot early on when Atletico Ottawa paid them a visit at Starlight Stadium. It took a while, but Amer Didic finally responded in spectacular fashion for Pacific FC. As half time was looming, Didic levelled up with a screamer free kick. Atletico remain top of the table, but Pacific came away with a point in the ever-intensifying fight for playoff places.
