NBLC9 Greatest Hits: Alex Campbell
After another stellar year for the Island Storm, Bramptonian Alex Campbell has been acknowledged for his efforts by the NBL Canada with the 2019-20 Canadian of the Year award. He was the team's leader in both scoring and assists, with respective averages of 20.0 and 4.6 in 21 games, and was one of the top rebounders for the Storm on the season.
It is a much deserved reward for one of the NBLC's powerhouse offensive players, who has put in plenty of top performances in the season. These are his very best showings for the Storm this season:
28th December 2019 vs Halifax Hurricanes
Campbell may not have topped the stat sheet in this one, but he contributed in all areas on the floor to help lift the Storm to their firs win of the season. The visiting Hurricanes had no answer for their rampant hosts, who won out 124-99, while Campbell finished with 15 points and well as 10 in rebounds and assists, the first triple-double of the season.
January 5th vs Moncton Magic
This was probably the Storm’s most impressive victory of the season, taking down the league’s top team on their home court, and Campbell was instrumental in their offensive push.
They led the Magic by fourteen points in the opening phase of the game, but after a fight back instigated by Corey Allmond and Billy White, it all came down to the last quarter. Campbell gave the Storm a late eight-point lead, which would be a big part of their eventual 113-108 victory, with Campbell himself finishing as their top scorer with 27 points.
January 14th at KW Titans
Campbell came into this one off the bench and opened his scoring with six points in just over a minute. He went on to find more scoring chances in the second quarter and in the third he played all twelve minutes, scoring the last of his ten points and bringing his total to what would be a team-high 23.
It wasn’t enough to best the KW Titans, whose 35-point third quarter lead proved too much to overcome, but Campbell regained his starting spot in style after a highly impressive bench showing.
February 9th vs Windsor Express
Here Campbell had an explosive start, with sixteen points in the first quarter alone, at the end of which the Storm were up 37-18. There was no let up from him for the game’s remainder, as went on to finish with the high score in both the game and his season - 36 points in 37 minutes on the floor. The Storm beat the Express 136-97 and coming days after he scored 29 against Halifax, Campbell earned his third Canadian Player of the Week award of the season.
