Know Your Team: Wayne McCullough

Moncton Magic

6’5

Guard

From Hockley, Texas

2019 NBLC Champion

Sometimes it takes the right team to bring out the best in a player. That was true for Wayne McCullough, whose abilities came to full fruition when he joined the Moncton Magic.

McCullough earned all-state and state championship all-tournament team selection as a senior at Rosehill Christian in Harris County, Texas. He then went on to play four seasons for the Colorado Christian Cougars in NCAA Division 2.

After seeing limited minutes in his first two seasons, he became the starting shooting guard in junior year and led the Cougars to win the 2015 National Christian College Athletic Association championship. He posted career-best averages of 13.8 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game on 49% field shooting in his senior year.

He made his professional debut in 2016 for the Island Storm, playing in sixteen games in his first season, recording just 3.7 points on an average 12.5 minutes played per game. He re-signed with the team the following season and saw his time reduced, but nonetheless made it to the postseason as he had done the year before.

After making an attempt to join the Arizona Suns in the NBA G League in 2018, McCullough returned to Canada and joined the Moncton Magic. The Magic, clearly seeing his potential, made him the starting shooting guard.

The team were about to see big rewards for their faith in him - McCullough flourished as a player with the Magic, 9.6 points and 4.8 rebounds, exceeding all expectations and playing a big part in Moncton capturing their first NBLC championship.

He was re-signed with the Magic for the following season. Shortened to just 23 games, he played in every one, starting in thirteen and had the best numbers of his career so far. He averaged 14.1 points and 5.4 rebounds on 52% field shooting. The Magic had the best record of every 2019-20 NBLC team, but the season came to an end before seeing if they could reclaim the title.

In the space of a single season McCullough went from being a rotation player to a starter, then cemented his standing with the Magic the following season, for whom he continues to play at his best.
