NBLC Recap: February 7th
It was a great night for scoring as both of saturday's NBL Canada match-ups, both hosted by Central Division teams, saw plenty of high scoring performances from those who took to the courts in Ontario.
St. John's Edge vs KW Titans
The Titans ended their first quarter scoring with thirteen unanswered points, but after taking their biggest lead of the game - sixteen points early in the second quarter - the Edge struck back with high percentage basketball which saw them lead 53-48 at half time.
When the game resumed Damon Lynn and Ed Horton combined to give the lead back to the Titans. Even with the Edge still highly accuracte from three-point territory, KW took a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter. Junior Cadougan and Coron Williams closed the gap down the final stretch, but Lynn had ten points in a row for the Titans, guaranteeing them the victory by a final score of 114-108.
The game was an excellent show of three-point shooting, with 32 total treys made. Five of them belonged to Coron Williams, who had 17 for St. John’s off the bench, while Cadougan finished as their top scorer with 25 points and Olu Ashalou had 20 for the visitors in the loss.
For KW, Akeem Ellis finished with a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds, Horton had 22 points of his own and Lynn outscored all on the floor with 34 points for the Titans in their impressive win over the Edge.
London Lightning vs Sudbury Five
Fourteen first quarter points from both Jaylen Bland and Braylon Rayson saw Sudbury heavily overpower London at the game’s opening. Xavier Moon tried to lift the visitors in the second quarter, but with Bland still firing on all cylinders, the Five kept the lead out of their opponents’ reach.
Sudbury took a twenty-point lead in the third quarter while London struggled to make significant strides to get back into the game. In the fourth quarter 16 points from AJ Gaines seemed promising from London, but 22 from Rayson in the same period would ensure victory would be Sudbury’s.
Nine players recorded double-digit showings, one being Moon who had 26 for London, who were led by Gaines with 30 off the bench. Sudbury, who made 24 three-pointers in the contest, saw twenty-plus point games from Bland and JR Holder while Rayson was outstanding with 49 points in the team’s 131-119 home victory.
