In the 2019-20 NBL Canada season, the Halifax Hurricanes will be able to call on the all-around skills of league newcomer Tremayne Johnson, skills he has honed from his wealth of experience in a number of locations and at very different levels of basketball.
As a teenager, Johnson was part of 2007’s number one high school team, Artesia, where he played alongside NBA superstar James Harden. From there he joined the LA Southwest Cougars until 2010, when he made the move to the Eastern Washington Eagles in NCAA.
In his first season with EWU, Johnson finished fourth in conference for blocked shots and would finish his tenure with 8.1 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. Graduating in 2012, he began his professional career in Bahrain with Al Manama, before going on to average 7.1 points in 11 games for Timisoara in Romania in the 2013-14 Divizia A season.
In 2014, he signed with the Indonesia Warriors of the ASEAN Basketball League. He was the team leader in scoring, steals and blocks and the league's only player that season to finish in the top ten in the five main categories. He was also third overall in scoring and steals.
From there, he averaged a double-double playing with Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia, finishing the 2016-17 season with 23 points and 10 rebounds per game. He then went on to play in Cyprus and for the Mauricio Baez Metropolitanos in the Dominican Republic. In 2018 he signed with Titanes Barranquilla in Colombia, reaching the league finals but losing the tital in five games.
After much travelling, he finally touched down in Canada, signing with the Halifax Hurricanes ahead of the 2019-20 NBLC season. In his first competitive game, he registered 19 points and 11 rebounds, and would continue to be a frequent and dependable scorer for the team.
Since turning pro, wherever Johnson has applied his trade he has always made big returns for his team. He has already done this so far for Halifax in the first half of the 2019-20 NBL Canada season, and they will be hoping this continues as the season carries on.
