NBLC Recap: February 23rd
Sunday night in the NBL Canada was at time riveting and at others historic and unforgettable.
Island Storm vs St. John's Edge
The Edge had the better start to the game behind the work on offence behind Karrington Ward and Cane Broome, but in the second half Antwon Lillard led the Storm from off the bench to close the gap to one at the end of the first half.
When play resumed the Edge pushed their advantage out more and went on to lead by 17 points in the fourth quarter. After which, Johnathan Loyd and Robbie Robinson combined to bring down the deficit, with Robinson tying the scores with just under three minutes left on the clock.
The Storm fought for the lead in the remaining time, but Junior Cadougan put the Edge up by three with two seconds left. Alex Campbell tried for a game-winning three-point shot, but it missed, leaving the final score 109-106 to St. John's.
Robinson led his team with 25 points and 17 rebounds, but that nor Lillard’s 24 bench points could not save the game for the Storm. Meanwhile, Karrington Ward was the game’s leader with 26 points for the Edge in their win.
Halifax Hurricanes vs Moncton Magic
17 first quarter points from Billy White helped to keep distance between the Magic and the Hurricanes early on. Moncton’s all-around form continued into the second half while Halifax could not catch up, the visitors trailed by seventeen points at half time.
The Hurricanes’ offence improved in the second half, behind Joel Kindred who had 20 points in the last two quarters. However, there was no let up from the Magic either. With White and Marcus Lewis putting up a final push for the home side, they won the game 136-104.
Kindred led the Hurricanes with 24 points while CJ Washington finished with a double-double of 18 points and 14 rebounds. The performance of the night belonged to Billy White, though, who had a historic 52 points for the Magic on a night those in attendance at the Avenir Centre will never forget.
KW Titans vs Windsor Express
The Titans put the first points on the board, but the rest of the first quarter was all Windsor. Their higher-percentage offence put them ten points clear of KW in the first half, and they continued their superior scoring for the game's remainder.
Despite the best efforts of Jonathan Harris and Akeem Scott, who respectively had 20 and 18 points in the game for the Titans, this early setback proved too hard for them overcome. Chris Jones had 20 points and 12 rebounds off the Express bench, Quinnel Brown also had 20 in the game while Kirk Williams Jr led all with 21 in Windsor’s 109-99 victory.
