NBLC Recap: February 13th

The NBL Canada's three-game thursday slate saw one game go down to the wire, another with a come-from-behind victory and the third with a dominant performance from the victors.

Sudbury Five vs London Lightning

The Lightning had the best start to the game, leading by seven in the first half, but it didn’t take long for Sudbury’s starters to turn the game on its head. The Five took the lead, which grew to eight points in the second quarter. As the first half came to a close, the Lightning closed the gap and then took the lead, heading to the locker rooms up by one.

The teams jostled for the lead at the start of the second half, but London’s inside looks, much of which coming from Marcus Capers - saw them go in front by fifteen points. They led by eight for much of the fourth quarter, but Sudbury started to gain ground.

Jarryn Skeete had two three-pointers in a row to make it a one-point game with a minute to go, and after numerous missed attempts from London, Marlon Johnson made the game-winning layup with three seconds left.

Randy Phillips led London with 32 points, while Marcus Capers and AJ Gaines both finished with double-doubles. For victorious Sudbury, Dexter Willimas had an impressive 23 points and 10 rebounds in the game, while Johnson led all with 36 in the 117-116 win.

St. John's Edge vs KW Titans

The Titans’s early ten-point lead after thirteen unanswered was levelled off by the Edge soon after, but KW had the upper hand over St. John’s from the field, with much of their points coming from Damon Lynn and Ed Horton, to hold off any attempts at their lead in the first half. At the end of which they led St. John's by three points.

When the game resumed, 15 points in nine minute from Karrington Ward played a big part in the Edge’s taking the lead, and in the fourth 16 points from Cane Broome capped off the come-from-behind win for the visitors, the final score 108-95 in their favour.

Horton had a team-high 21 points for the Titans, while Nigel Tyghter recorded a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds in the team's third straight loss. For the Edge, Ward was the top scorer with 22 while Montay Brandon had 20 points and 17 total boards off the bench.

Windsor Express vs Halifax Hurricanes

Halifax opened the scoring and while Windsor had just a few looks from the field, the Hurricanes built a double-digit lead towards the end of the first quarter, down almost exclusively to Antoine Mason and Marvell Waithe. In the second Quinnell Brown caught fire for the Express, but he was matched by Ta’Quan Zimmerman, who helped the Hurricanes hold on to their big lead.

In the fourth Windsor’s bench players capped off the big victory, 124-98. Brown led the team with 23 points off the bench, while Waithe had 26 off the Halifax bench and Mason’s game-high 29 was small comfort in the loss.
