NBLC Recap: HFX vs SJE, January 27th
It was the second day in a row when the Mile One Centre would host the Halifax Hurricanes, who would be looking for a much different result than the five-point loss they suffered at the hands of the St. John's Edge the night before. The Edge's win streak now stood at five, though, and they were looking to keep that going.
Halifax began the game with a 5-0 run and before long had a double-digit lead over St. John’s. Ahmad Thomas closed the gap to one from beyond the arc, but CJ Washington’s field efforts kept the advantage wit the Hurricanes.
Washington and Antoine Mason combined early in the second quarter to build on the Hurricanes’ lead, which was again cut to a single possession late in the period, but Mason ended the first half with seven points, keeping Halifax ahead by eight.
The Hurricanes began the second half by taking their lead to double digits and their continued short-range success kept the Edge at bay. Jesse Jones led St. John’s in keeping the game tight, but every time they threatened, Halifax struck back with a vengeance.
Mason had 17 points in the fourth quarter, taking his total up to 37 to go with 15 rebounds in the game, as Halifax snap their cold streak with a 101-97 win over the Edge. Washington also totalled a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Jones led the Edge with 24 points in the loss, while Thomas followed with 14 off the St. John's bench in the four-point loss.
