KW Titans vs St. John's Edge - January 6th Game Recap

Neither the St. John's Edge or the KW Titans had the best of starts to the new NBL Canada season, but were continuing to look for a winning form in the still young season, evident in this inter-division game at the Mile One Centre on Tuesday night.

The Titans had the best start, leading 9-2 after only a few minutes played, but Junior Cadougan began to make up the difference and Cane Broome gave St. John’s the lead late in first quarter, but a jump shot from Marvin Philips saw KW end the opening period ahead by a bucket.

In the second quarter Karrington Ward made the difference for the Edge, leading the team in the field to take their biggest lead of the game, 11 points, and head to the locker rooms a full ten points clear of the Titans.

Jared Nickens had the highest individual score per quarter with 13 points in the third, he helped thorn the game around for KW, who led by nine points ahead of the decisive phase of the game.

St. John’s kept probing in the fourth until they re-took the lead midway through, and having the better looks down the stretch, the home team saw out victory in close-fought match-up with the Titans, the final score 119-115 in their favour.

Nickens finished as the game's top scorer with 26 points, while his team mates Johnathan Harris and Damon Lynn both recorded twenty-point double-doubles in the loss. Meanwhile, St. John saw the best performances from their rising star duo of Karrington Ward and Cane Broome, who both finished with 24 points, while Montay Brandon had 21 points and 12 rebounds off the bench.

It won't be long before these two will meet again, the sole January 8th fixture will be a repeat of this one: same sides, same location, same chance to make a statement in the still-young NBLC season.
