Canada Continue Unbeaten Streak at the Parapan American Games

After two group stage wins each for Canada's men's and women's wheelchair basketball teams, they had one more game each to clinch the top spot and put themselves in the best position possible for the medal rounds.

In the case of the women’s team, they were once again unstoppable, making two-thirds of all their two-point attempts while Mexico were held to single digits in all four quarters with only three players making the scoresheet.

Arinn Young led once again with 29 points, while Kathleen Daneneau contributed 13 as well as 10 rebounds, while Cindy Ouellet was all over the Mexicans on defence. Canada finish first place in the pool and earn a semi final spot with a 79-21 win over Mexico.

The men’s team had a more heated encounter with Argentina - after leading by double digits early on, Argentina’s close range play saw them close the gap and go to the locker rooms at half time ahead by one point. Adolfo Berdun led the way for the Argentinians with 26 points and nine assists.

There was little to choose between the teams on offence, but Canada were able to re-take the lead behind a great all-around performance from Nikola Goncin, who finished with 16 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists, with Patrick Anderson contributing 24 points of his own.

Argentina tried to close the gap more as time ticked down, but Canada held them off to top the group with a final 78-71 win. This sees the men's team join the women's at the top of their respective groups with unbeaten records.

The men's team will next be in action on the 28th, when they will be taking on hosts Peru in the quarter finals. The women's team, meanwhile, will take to the court the day after to face Brazil for a place in the gold medal game.

Full reports of these games will be posted here as they happen and visit the official Parapan American Games for more.
