SJEvsKIT - Game 5 Recap
Game Five of this year's Central Division finals took place at the Aud in Kitchener, where the KW Titans had evened out the series over the visiting St. John's Edge, and were looking to continue their successful streak at home on Tuesday night.
The Titans opened the scoring with six unanswered points and took an early eight-point lead, but their supremacy did not last long. Both Jared Nickens and Jarryn Skeete caught fire for the Edge, and powered them in front, leading by seven at the end of the first quarter.
Next it was Glen Davis’s turn to shine for the Edge, but on the other end a perfect second quarter on offence from Ed Horton kept up the pressure from the Titans, yet they still trailed by nine at the half.
KW’s momentum seemed to run out in the third, though. Despite finding the occasional scoring opportunity, St. John’s had the upper hand when it came to scoring.
Led by the efforts of Skeete and Davis, the Edge took their biggest lead of the game just after the start of the fourth quarter - 26 points - when the Titans started to try and salvage the game for themselves.
Every player who took to the court in the fourth got a look at basket, from all distances, and they kept interrupting St. John’s scoring rhythm and kept looking to close the gap as the game wound down. With Isaiah Tate and Russell Byrd continuing to put up points for the Edge, though, it proved too tall an order for the Titans to turn the game around.
Akeem Ellis was the stand out for the home team with 21 points and 12 rebounds for the Titans, while Ed Horton contributed 19 and Derek Hall had 14 off the bench, but there was nothing anyone could do to help lift the team to victory.
Jarryn Skeete and Glen Davis both had 21-point double-doubles, while Jared Nickens turned heads with 17 points off the bench for the Edge as they move to within one game of the finals with a 107-92 game five victory over the Titans.
The series moves back to St. John's for game six, which will be played on May 3rd.
