NBLC Recap: March 2nd & 3rd
All the action from a big weekend in the NBL Canada as the season enters the home stretch.
After leading by ten early on, the KW Titans then had to fight back when the Saint John Riptide closed the gap. The Titans took their biggest lead of the game, 12 points, in the fourth quarter, only for the Riptide to make it a two-point game down the stretch. A three from Tramar Sutherland provided to be the decisive play, lifting the Titans to the 99-94 win.
TJ Maston led all scorers with 26 for the Riptide, while KW saw 21 from Akeem Ellis and a double-double from Derek Hall (16 points, 11 rebounds) as part of the win.
The next night the Titans saw an incredible show from Ed Horton, who had 44 points, but that would be enough to overcome the Moncton Magic, whose superior shooting - which included 17 threes - saw them lead for much of the way at the Avenir Centre. Corey Allmond had 27 points and 10 rebounds, while Jason Calliste added 24 of his own as the Magic further strengthen their grip on the league with a 120-108 win over the Titans.
40 first quarter points buoyed the Island Storm as they hosted the Halifax Hurricanes, leading from start to finish. Halifax saw 23 points from Terry Thomas off the bench and 21 from Joel Kindred, but it was an otherwise stilted offensive show from the Hurricanes.
The Storm led by as many as 39 points in the contest and saw eight players score in double digits, led by Tyree White with 21 to go with his 16 total rebounds, picking up their third win in a row, 129-105, as they try to keep themselves alive in the potential playoff picture.
The St. John’s Edge got off to the best start at the Mile One Centre, leading the Cape Breton Highlanders by ten. Cape Breton saw 18 points from Devin Sweetney, 16 off the bench from Jamal Reynolds and 12 points and 10 rebounds from Jerome Saegers, but with an otherwise lacklustre show on offence, the Highlanders found themselves on the back foot.
The Edge, meanwhile, finished off their opponents by building a 22-points lead and their bench contributing 41 points in a commanding performance that sees them retake the top spot in the Central Division. The final score being 105-84 in their favour.
