Know Your Team: TJ Maston

Saint John Riptide

6’8

Forward

From DeSoto, Texas

Seeing Terry "T.J." Maston Jr.'s consistent high-scoring efforts for the Riptide, it's enough to wonder what the team ever did without him.

In his senior year at DeSoto High School, Maston averaged 13.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.4 blocks, was named the team's offensive player of the year and won the district championship as well as numerous tournament MVP awards.

Rated the 22nd best high school player in America, he was recruited to join the Baylor Bears in 2014. He played 106 games and competed in three NCAA Division 1 tournaments, reaching only the first round in 2015 and 2016. In 2017, he scored 19 points and 9 rebonds in Baylor's first and second round match-ups in the competition before the team fell to South Carolina in the East semi-finals.

Posting his career-best results of 11.4 points and 5.7 rebounds in senior year, where he was also named the Big 12 sixth man of the year, he ended his time with Baylor on an average 7.3 points, 3.6 rebounds and 53% field shooting.

In 2018, Maston was chosen eighth overall in the NBA G League Draft by the Agua Caliente Clippers. He appeared in only three games before being released in December, after which he signed with the Saint John Riptide, where he hit the ground running.

He put up double-digit performances in nine of his first eleven games for the Riptide, in five of which he went over the twenty point mark and on one occasion posting 35. In that same time he became part of the team's starting lineup.

Maston's performances so far have made him one of the biggest success stories in a season where the Riptide have seen many unsung heroes stand up and help transform the team and inspire them to victory.
