NBLC Recap: January 4th

It was another exciting evening in the NBL Canada on a three-game Friday:

Keeping the score line tight early and often, the Island Storm looked to be in with a good chance to end their losing streak. Sampson Carter had 33 points and 9 rebounds for the Storm, who also saw 20 from Russell Byrd and a double-double from Alex Campbell (13 points, 14 total boards).

However, a late surge from the visiting St. John's Edge saw them take an eight-point lead that the Storm could not overturn. In his first start for the Edge, Glen Davis led the team with 20 points, while double-doubles were recorded from Desmond Lee (19 points, 10 rebounds) and Maurice Jones (13 points and rebounds) and Jared Nickens and Diego Kapelan came off the bench and had 15 and 10 points respectively.

Making over half of all their shot attempts in the game, the London Lightning had a slight advantage in the first half against the Sudbury Five. Just when it seemed the game was getting away from them, an eight-point run from Sudbury in the third put them in the driver's seat.

It was an amazing show from Sudbury's starters, four of which finishing the game with more than 20 points, while London's best performances came from their bench, with 26 points from AJ Gaines and 23 from Marvell Waithe. Even so, it wouldn't be enough to lift the Lightning to victory. The win was Sudbury's by 129 points to 124.

After a back-and-forth first quarter against the Moncton Magic, at the end of which the Magic led by six, the Windsor Express were rampant from the field in the second quarter, outscoring the visiting team 33-19. Nick Evans and Duke Mondy did all they could in the second half to help give the lead back to Moncton, but as a whole the team did not make enough of their chances on offence - and Windsor took advantage.

Mondy and Evans finished with 21 and 18 points respectively, while Corey Allmond led the Magic with 22 points. Meanwhile, Juan Pattillo led all on the floor with 25 points and 8 rebounds for Windsor, who also saw 43 points from their bench players, on their way to their third straight win by 110 points to 102.
