Know Your Team: Marvin Binney
Saint John Riptide
6'3
Guard
From Toronto, Ontario
Marvin Binney has always been a team player who makes his presence felt when on the court, something he continues to do to this day with the Saint John Riptide.
In 2009, Binney was rated the fifth best high school point guard by Hoop Stars Canada, playing for Eastern Commerce Collegiate Institute. From here, he was recruited to the New Mexico Thunderbirds in 2011, where he played for one season. He led the team in assists and steals and was named Defensive Player of the Year.
He then made the move to the NCAA, playing rotation minutes for the Duquesne Dukes in Pittsburgh. In 2014 he joined NCAA Division 2 team St Mary's Rattlers, where he saw much more playing time. Starting in 54 out of 56 games for the Rattlers, Binney averaged 17.8 points per game, was the 2014 Heartland conference Newcomer of the Year and earned two all-conference selections.
His time with St Mary's up, he turned professional in 2016, but spent most of his first season on the Windsor Express bench. The following season he stayed in the NBL Canada, but joined the Saint John Riptide. Appearing in 33 games, he averaged 3.2 points, 1.3 rebounds and 1.2 assists, proving to be a big role player for the Riptide.
Dependable, athletic and capable on all spaces on the floor, it's easy to see why the Riptide were keen to retain Binney for the 2018-19 season.
