Edge Sign Former NBA Champion
Glen "Big Baby" Davis, a 6'9 forward with eight years of NBA experience, is the latest high-profile signing of the St. John's Edge.
His career makes for impressive reading. Davis represented the West in the 2004 All-American game, before going on to play for the LSU Tigers for three years, winning the 2006 Southeastern Conference Player of the Year award.
Davis was chosen by the Seattle SuperSonics in the 2007 NBA Draft, later traded to the Boston Celtics. In his rookie season, he would go on to win the NBA Championship with the Celtics. After which, he played three more seasons with the Celtics, reaching his second NBA Finals in 2010, where the team lost to the Los Angeles Lakers.
He was then traded to the Orlando Magic, where he saw some of his career-best records for a single game. In 2014, he joined the Los Angeles Clippers for one season.
He made the decision to take a break from basketball in 2015, in order to recover from injuries and focus on other ventures. Davis made the decision to return to the sport in 2018, originally trying out with Croatian club Zadar, but later joining the St. John's Edge.
This signing has made big waves in the NBL Canada community and the rest of the basketball world. The Edge in particular will be hoping that, despite a multi-year absence from playing, Davis can help turn around their uncertain start to the season. The team currently have a 2-5 record and are in fourth place in the Central Division.
The St. John's Edge will next be in action on Friday, December 14th, when they host the Island Storm at the Mile One Centre. Their new signing is expected to be in action then.
