NBLC Recap: December 9th
Headlines and highlights were the order of the day on a three-game NBL Canada Sunday night.
The London Lightning hosted the KW Titans in a game where no one could have guessed what was coming. London saw good performances early on from Marvin Phillips, who finished with 23 points, and Mo Bolden, who ended the night on a double-double of 12 points and 14 rebounds. As the game went on, though, London quickly and severely lost their grip of the game.
Making his debut for the Titans was Joel Friesen, who scored 19 in the final quarter to finish with a game-high 31 bench points against his former club. He and the rest of the KW bench put up 80 points, and he was one of six players scoring in double digits for the Titans. Outscoring London 43-23 in the final quarter, the KW Titans finished off an exceptional win over the defending champions, the final score being 123-97.
A back-and-forth game at the Sudbury Community Centre saw the lead change hands between the Sudbury Five and the Windsor Express at the end of the first three quarters. Sudbury had a strong performance from their starters, with three of them scoring over 20 points, while Windsor had 52 points from their bench, 21 of them from DeAndre Thomas and Reggie Hamilton and Angelo Griffis each putting up 14.
Windsor started the fourth quarter down by eight, before closing the gap down the stretch. A late and-one layup from Dexter Williams and a jump shot from Grandy Glaze proved to be decisive plays for Sudbury, as Horace Wormley closed the gap to two from the line, but Windsor were unable to get another shot off in time.
Sudbury survive the late surge from the Express to win 123-121, keeping them at the top of the Central Division while Windsor remain at the bottom following their third straight loss.
For all of the first half, the Moncton Magic had to fight off constant threats from the Halifax Hurricanes, who took the lead in the third quarter - but that didn’t last long. Scoring consistently from the field in the final period of play, Billy White and Nick Evans lifted Moncton to capture the win.
Halifax saw 52 of their points in the game come from the bench, with Jordan Washington leading the team with 22. Meanwhile, Wayne McCullough had 21 points and 14 rebounds for Moncton, who saw another double-double from Denzell Taylor, with 11 points and rebounds off the bench. The Magic remain undefeated at the end of this one, which they won by 95 points to 91.
