Know Your Team: Robbie Robinson
Island Storm
6’5
Guard
From Northridge, California
One of the most interesting additions to the NBL Canada, Robbie Robinson is finally seeing his years of hard work and perseverance rewarded with a contract with the Island Storm.
Robinson spent two years at Riverside City College, where, shooting 53% from the floor, he was part of their first California Community College Athletic Association championship team for 45 years. He then joined the Cal State Fullerton Titans in 2009 and later the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes from 2010 to 2012.
Robinson would later represent the USA at the Dubai International Basketball Championship in 2014, and it would be two more years before he signed his first pro contract with Correcaminos in Mexico, where he played only six games.
Robinson learned his game most in the Drew League, America's number one pro-am basketball league. First playing in his sophomore college year, he would play for the Pandas alongside players including Metta World Peace, and against such others as DeMar DeRozan and LeBron James.
"In order to get into the league you have to be a top player and recognised as a good athlete,” Robinson says of his time in the Drew League, “It’s a true test to see where your game stacks up against the best.”
Having lit up the Drew League for many years, his abilities were finally recognised by the Island Storm, who signed him in the 2018 off-season. Named player of the week after 20 points and 10 rebounds against the Riptide, he has already repaid his new team for their faith in him - and will no doubt continue to do so again as the season continues.
