Hurricanes bring in Freeman, Brown, Opong, sweep out three.
After a slow start to the season, the Halifax Hurricanes have made some big changes in the hope of turning it around.
The team have signed NBL Canada all-time leading rebounder Gabe Freeman, who was originally set to join the St. John's Edge. The highly decorated veteran of sixteen professional teams was the first winner of both the NBLC Most Valuable Player award and league championship.
He is one of three players, alongside Rhamel Brown and Robinson Odoch Opong, who are joining the Hurricanes after the season start.
Brown returns to Halifax after averaging 7.7 points and assists per game for the team in the 2017-18 season, in addition to shooting over 50% from the field. Previously he won three consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year awards with the Manhattan Jaspers, and has played for Lucerne in the Swiss LNA.
Opong comes to the Hurricanes from Obila in Spain, in what will be his second NBL Canada stint having played for the Saint John Riptide in 2015-16. The former Rogers State Hillcat guard has also had club experience in Lebanon, and was the scoring and assists leader for Uganda at AfroBasket 2017.
This trio will be replacing rookies Devonte Elliott and Jahmel Taylor, formerly of the Nevada Wolf Pack and Fresno State Bulldogs respectively; and Hernst Laroche, New Mexico State record holder who has also played in Ukraine, Czech Republic, Hungary, France and Argentina.
The Hurricanes will be hoping the prior NBL Canada experience of their new acquisitions will help them overcome their teething issues of the still-young season and get them on track to one of the most feared teams in both the Atlantic Division and the league.
