2015 Canadian of the Year

Tyrone Watson's four years in NBL Canada have made him one of the most formidable and feared players on both ends of the floor.

After winning two Greater Hamilton Athletic Conference championships with Hamilton Cathedral High School, Watson then joined the New Mexico State Aggies of the NCAA.

He played four years with the Aggies, alongside fellow Canadians Sim Bhullar, Renaldo Dixon and Hernst Laroche. In 2012 he was named to the All-WAC Tournament team, and in the following season, his last for the team, he recorded career-best averages of 10.3 points and 4.9 rebounds.

Watson signed with the Halifax Rainmen in 2014, where he averaged 13 points and 6.2 rebounds in the season. Watson's performances won him the Canadian player of the year award, and he helped Halifax top the Atlantic Division and reach the finals. He followed Rainmen coach Josep Carlos to his next team, Al-Muharraq in Bahrain.

Watson soon returned to the NBLC, signing with the Orangeville A’s for the remainder of the 2015/16 season, where he averaged 16.8 points and 6.3 rebounds in nineteen games.

He returned to Halifax the following season, this time to play for the Hurricanes. He started every game for the Hurricanes in the 2016/17 season and was named to the All-Defensive team, the following season he averaged 13.5 points and 4.7 rebounds.

Outside of domestic basketball, Watson also brings with him international experience, having winning a bronze medal with Canada at the 2008 FIBA Under-18 Americas championship.

Tyrone Watson has quickly established himself as one of the biggest defensive players in the NBL Canada, and as his fourth season with the Hurricanes is about to begin, both he, the team and the people of Halifax will be hoping his skills can lead the team on to great things.
