Two teams scored historic wins on the second day of action at the Women's AmeriCup, and for two more it was business as usual as they continue to make their case for pan-continental supremacy.
In the day's opening game Cuba were in control for the first half, but in the second Paraguay rallied behind 27 points from Paola Ferrari to score their first ever win in the competition - a win that even the Cubans congratulated them for.
The surprise wins did not stop there - Virgin Islands’ two-point shooting and big rebounding effort saw them lead Venezuela from the start. Imani Tate had 26 and was one of four Virgin Islanders to score in double figures in their 79-53 win.
Despite some good work from Colombia to match Brazil both in the paint and from long-range, but were out-matched by Brazil’s consistency, strong play in the post and big defensive effort. Leticia Rodrigues had a double-double, 13 points and 17 rebounds, as Brazil saw out Colombia 68-47.
Despite another good show from Allison Gibson, who had 16 points for Puerto Rico, and out-scoring Canada from three-point territory, the Canadian’s strength and physicality meant they dominated Puerto Rico in the paint. Kia Nurse and Katherine Plouffe led their team’s big scoring performance which helped them see off Puerto Rico by 16 points.
After all the surprises, thrills and first-rate basketball of day two, this tournament has started to come alive, with hopefully more of the same to come. More on all the action at the AmeriCup can be found on the tournament's official website.
