EuroBasket Women 2017 Quarter Finals Report

Surprises, skill and history being made were abound on quarter-finals day of EuroBasket Women 2017.
Belgium vs Italy
It was Belgium all the way in this match-up: they took control of the game early and did not relinquish it. Italy once again turned to their go-to girl Cecilia Zandalasini, who had 23 points in the contest, but the Italians were no match for Belgium’s team play and strength, both offensively and defensively. Emma Meesseman recorded up a double-double and her teammate, Kim Mestdagh, had a terrific shooting game, finishing on 19 points. Italy tried everything to get back into the game, but every time they looked threatening Belgium struck back and re-asserted their grip on the game. Winning 79-66, Belgium advance to the EuroBasket semi finals for the first time in their history.
Turkey vs Greece
To begin with, this game conformed to the script, as Turkey’s starting five put them in control for the first quarter. Turkey did not have their foot completely on the gas, however, and Greece took advantage. Behind yet another standout performance from Evanthia Maltsi, Greece were alert and composed, finding many scoring opportunities and playing great offensive basketball. A disorganised Turkey became more opportunistic in their hunt for baskets to get themselves back into the game, but they would not get anywhere near the winning score line. Greece’s first-rate display of offence and teamwork saw them run-out victors, 84 points to 55, and passionate celebrations ensued.
Spain vs Latvia
After a close first quarter Spain took the lead which grew to double digits, almost entirely down to the duo of Alban Torrens and Marta Xargay. Latvia were smart, coped well with Spain’s defensive pressure and had some good looks from the outside, but found themselves outplayed in this game. The Latvians fought with everything they had, but just could not find an answer. Winning by 20 points, 67-47, Spain advance to the semi-finals with ease.
France vs Slovakia
From the start of this game it was all France. Playmakers Olivia Epoupa and Celine Dumerc combined with scorers Valeriane Ayayi, Marine Johannes and Endene Miyem for some intense offence and consistent scoring. They communicated and passed the ball well, evident by the team plays they exhibited throughout the game, and kept themselves firmly in the lead. Slovakia seemed overwhelmed and, despite the best efforts of their top scorer Barbora Balintova, could not hold on to the ball or find enough scoring chances to give themselves a chance. France saw out a comfortable win, 67-40.
Belgium will face Spain and Greece will take on France in the semi-finals, and if this tournament is anything to go by, there's no telling which way these fixtures will go.
