2017 World Rallycross Championship Round Five: Great Britain
The final race of the 2017 World RX of Great Britain.
Why Rallycross?
Rallycross is pure drama. The races are short and laps can be over in seconds, there really is no room for error. The tracks, however, are highly demanding, making it all the more difficult to put in an incident-free lap.
Rallycross courses are made up of tarmac and gravel sections, making drivers have to adjust their method of driving constantly throughout the race. In addition there is an extended section of the track - the 'Joker Lap' - that every driver has to complete take on any lap of their choosing during the race, making race tactics crucial to putting in a winning drive.
In short, everything comes down the final race. Even the world's best driver can find themselves at the back of the pack if they are not completely fired up for it.
While Rallycross takes place at various different levels, the world championship is competed for by the most versatile racing drivers in the world. Currently, Volkswagen have a huge lead in the constructor's championship, while Sweden's Johan Kristofferson leads the driver standings, though only just, with fellow countryman Mattias Ekstrom and Peter Solberg of Norway fractionally behind him.
