NBLC Recap: November 23rd & 24th
Two nights in a row, the NBL Canada saw games that went down to the wire and with big-scoring performances from top players.
The Moncton Magic and St John’s Edge could not be separated after two quarters at the Mile One Centre, then Moncton came out in the third quarter firing, going on to outscore the Edge 38-25. St. John’s tried to close the gap down the stretch behind their top scorer Maurice Jones (17 points), but came up just short.
Both teams saw great numbers from their benches – Denzell Taylor put up 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Magic, while Todd Brown had 16 points and 7 rebounds for the home side. Billy White led all scorers with 21 points for the Moncton Magic, who keep their unbeaten record alive with a 95-91 away win in St. John.
Led by Flenard Whitfield (20 points, 10 rebounds) and Derek Hall (19 points, 7 rebounds), the KW Titans were dominant in the first half against the Cape Breton Highlanders, and went on to lead by 17 points at half time. The Highlanders then took a double-digit lead behind great looks in the paint from Jamal Reynolds, the game’s top scorer with 30 points.
The Titans closed the gap and a three from Whitfield tied the scores with less than a second on the clock. The hero for Cape Breton, though, would be Bruce Massey Jr, who in the remaining time drew a foul from outside the arc and hit two of three game-winning free throws. Massey finished with 23 points and 13 rebounds in an incredible victory for the Cape Breton Highlanders by a score of 110-108.
